For Pet Lovers: the PupLight

Product Name: PupLight

Product Overview:

PupLight was named most ”Innovative New Product of 2006″ by HGTV and the AC News Gadget Guru. And here’s why:

1. PupLight makes dogs visible up to a mile a way. PupLight is visible from all angles and the dog walkers body doesn’t block the light from behind like most other products because the illumination makes a very visible halo of light. PupLight keeps dogs safe and visible on or off-leash.

2. PupLight provides so much light with it’s 3 ultra bright white LEDs you can see yards ahead of the dog when walking on leash. This allows you to see hazards ahead. Dead animals, poisonous animals, rancid food, holes, uneven sidewalk, ice. This added funtionality makes it the best product for dog walking.

3. The super bright light helps dogs with poor night vision see better. (Dogs 10 years+ or with cataracts can’t see well in the dark any more and they, in particular, like PupLight.)

4. It’s the only dog light that uses AAA batteries so it’s much less expensive to use over time when compared to other lighted dog products. You can also use re-chargeable batteries with it. The batteries are long lasting (up to 150 hours)and easy to change

5. PupLight was designed with long hair dogs in mind. Much of the light from a lighted collar is covered up by the fur of a long-haired dog. PupLight has a fur guard which keeps the dogs hair away from the light.

6. It comes with an easy on easy off adjustable elastic band so it’s easy to use. The collar is not attached to the leash so it doesn’t move around the dogs neck.

7. The light is adjustable and has a rim on top so it doesn’t shine in to your dogs or anyone else’s eyes.

8. The bright lights scare away wild animals

PupLight makes your nighttime dog walks safe and enjoyable and makes your dog visible off leash.

Review: We took our dog on a walk this evening, shamefully, for the first time in about a month. After receiving the PupLight in the mail a day or so ago I wanted to use it ASAP. It looked like fun and I knew I was running out of time to review this product before the baby arrives. I also knew Baxter would be happy to escape the confines of his backyard prison.

Admittedly Baxter is a runner. Even though he always comes back within about 15 minutes, he will bolt if he gets the chance. This makes walking him at night less appealing. Limited time during the day, the earlier dark skies, and general laziness has led to the bad doggy-mommy behavior of not taking him out at all. (And for those of you thinking he wouldn’t run if he got out more – this has been tested and is SO not the case.) At least I can have confidence that if he gets away at night, he will be MUCH more visible to any cars he may encounter if he is wearing the PupLight.

There wasn’t really anything about this product that we didn’t like. Upon opening it we saw the batteries were easy to put in. We snapped the cover on, attached it to the included collar and were ready to go. Our dog wears a Gentle Leader to prevent constant pulling, and a collar with his ID tags, so it was nice to not have to attach this product to anything. It was adjustable elastic and just slipped in amongst his other dog accessories. I was impressed how the collar shrunk down to be able to fit the littlest of dogs or puppies, and expanded enough that I could see being able to attach it to my waist (were I not 38 weeks pregnant), with the optional extender.

If you aren’t familiar with Dark Sky Communities, then you probably won’t understand the pitch-black atmosphere of some of our local neighborhoods. Our last community was a bit frightening to walk around at night and we took to lugging a huge flashlight around with us to watch out for various pitfalls and rattlesnakes. Baxter actually WAS bit on the face by a baby rattlesnake a few years ago, so we know this is a very real and scary possibility for curious puppies. Tonight the PupLight provided us the visibility to see where we were headed and anything slithery we might be approaching, as well as alerting others to the presence of our family.

Your Recommendation: My husband and I brainstormed all the pros and cons we could think of while out on our walk. As I stated above we couldn’t really come up with any cons. Here were the benefits we were able to come up with. No need to carry an extra light which leaves more hands free for various things: toddler wrangling, other dogs, warm pockets, a cell phone, etc. The light is adjustable and has a fur-guard to keep wooly coats and sloped chests from obscuring the light. The ease of snapping it on or off, without having to mess with his regular collar was a HUGE pro in my mind, now it just lives on its own collar amongst the leashes. We both liked that we were more visible in every way, as was Baxter. Our recommendation is if you have a dog, you should invest in this product for safety and convenience.

Overall Rating: 5, this product does exactly what it is supposed to do, is very affordable and extremely adaptable for whatever you might want to use it for. Don’t let the sad doggy face in his picture fool you; he had a great time tonight. He’s just camera shy.
