Watched the Pilot of Awkward, a new show on MTV last night and I love it! This show had edge and a little raunchiness (wouldn’t be on MTV without that!) but in a good way. It’s a throw back to the days I watched My So Called Life. Jenna, a nerd who’s just gotten her braces off, gives herself to the high school football hunk – who brushes her off afterwards. Only to slip and fall, in which everyone thinks is a suicide attempt. She decided to turn her ‘awkward’ situation into a chance to change and become a new Jenna. The creator says the show is inspired by Sixteen Candles. (FAV MOVIE OF ALL TIME! ok maybe it’s second to Breakfast Club, but you know the genre). Everyone has felt invisible in high school at one point or another and Jenna just makes you feel like you don’t need to be invisible anymore. Simply it’s a show about life, whether you’re 16 or 36 you can relate. The theme is about changing the way you feel about situations that happen to you (POSITIVE!) and not putting too much emphasis on the crap that happens in life but how you deal with it, which I feel should be and important running theme in anyone’s life.
So there’s Jenna, the main nerd who’s coming out of her shell. Matty the unobtainable football star and who worries about the social pressures of high school. Jake, Matty’s best friend, who is starting to think Jenna’s cool and doesn’t care too much what others think. Evil queen bee cheerleader Sadie, who’s insecurities cause her to be the #1 mean girl + her cheer minions. And Jenna’s two best friends Tamara and Ming, who support her quirky personality. The supporting cast looks amazing and this show will go far. I’m having a love / hate relationship with the characters so far, you’ll definitely get attached to them!
Love triangles, YES (unknowingly), Drama YES!, Mean girls YES! Nerdy girls, YES! Hot Boys, YES!
This show has everything to go down as a cult classic.
